Our School Initiatives

Sport in Dunmore N.S.

Sport and physical activity are an intrinsic part of the fabric of Scoil Nioclás Naofa.  The spacious grounds allow for many games to be played during break times.  Soccer and Rounders are the most popular.  Other playground games like 40/40 and skipping are played regularly.

Scoil Nioclás Naofa has a long tradition of swimming. Children from Senior Infants to sixth have a great opportunity to improve their skills with weekly lessons for classes in blocks throughout the year.

More recently the children have had the opportunity to explore dance, gymnastics and yoga.  These activities have proven very popular.

Dunmore N.S. Green Flag

Picture
We are very proud of our first green flag. We have tackled and continue to work on litter and waste in our school environment. We need the help of all pupils and especially parents to help us maintain the high standard we have achieved.

Here’s what you can do to help:

  • Label all your belongings clearly – jumpers, jackets, t-shirts, shirts, hats, scarves, gearbags, tracksuits. Remember labels fade in the wash so check them regularly. This is the only way to make sure a lost item will find its way back. Every term we send a large number of perfectly good clothing that is unclaimed to be recycled. Don’t let it be yours!
  • Help us reduce packaging in our lunchboxes. This is particularly important for younger children who have their lunches made and packed for them. Please avoid tinfoil and clingfilm and choose instead a resealable bag or a small tub inside the lunch box. Wash and recycle and left-over cartons or tubs.
  • Buy a lunchbox. This is the biggest help in reducing lunchbox waste.
  • Reuse your drink bottle. Instead of using cartons or buying a new drink each day, refill a bottle and you will reduce your waste greatly. Reduce, reuse, recycle!
  • Remember: Green’s our goal, play your role!

Scratch

Picture
Scratch is a computer language and online community where you can create your own interactive stories, games, and animations. Scratch teaches computational thinking and problem solving using a simple-to-use, yet powerful, building block approach to software development.

Incredible Years

Lego League

Picture
In this initiative in conjunction with Galway Education Centre and Medtronic, Children use Lego to develop robotics and early engineering skills.  This work is done in various classes in the final term and throughout the year by the teacher running the weekly after-school Lego Club

Active Learning

Picture
Using active learning and play as a methodology in this curriculum framework which has been developed for children from birth to 6 years of age. Junior and Senior infant teachers incorporate purposeful play sessions into their teaching and children’s learning develops through interaction with each other and partnership with parents.

Cursive Writing

Picture
The benefits of introducing cursive hand writing from the start has been well-documented by various experts, including Brendan Culligan.  There is a very strong link between improved spellings and using cursive writing.

Aistear
